Third Friday August tonight

Three shows at eye lounge:

LOGAN BELLEW: Theories

A theory can be both a question and an answer. However a theory really only purports to give us answers, often leaving us in a state of uncertainty. Growing out of John Keats' idea of “Negative Capability,” Theories by Logan Bellew explores our capability of accepting this uncertainty and even thriving in its beauty.

DAIN GORE: Desert Religion

Dain Q Gore presents new paintings in acrylic, oil and encaustic, alongside a live puppet show. The images and performance emulate the mental and spiritual wanderings of Jesus, Saints and Holy Fools. The puppet performance, “The Temptations (Not the Musical Act),” is co-written and co-performed with puppeteer Tommy Cannon, with a story lifted directly from the Gospel of St. Matthew with a wacky twist.

INGRID WELLS: Likeness

Likeness is a series of 20 new paintings in oil on panel by Ingrid V. Wells. These works are 4x4" which provides a certain type closeness between viewer and painting. All works are portraits of artists, reflecting on themes of modern identity and relationships of the creative. Bold, direct marks and playful color choices hint at the personalities behind the faces, while text and pattern play a role in defining space and the history between Wells and the other artists. Set in the Project Room of Eye Lounge, the space adds to the level of intimacy, placing the viewer in the center of the artist community.

eye lounge is at 419 East Roosevelt Street, Downtown Phoenix. For more info go to eyelounge.com.

Intersecting Paths, Blurring Lines

GABRIELA-MUREB

One of the biggest group shows of the year isn’t at a museum—Converging Trajectories: Crossing Borders, Building Bridges, curated by Ted Decker, opens tonight at Modified Arts. Decker wrote a story about the show for Hearsight Magazine:

“Converging Trajectories: Crossing Borders, Building Bridges” is an invitational group exhibition of works by 42 artists I have encountered through travel and ongoing research. Each is on a personal trajectory in pursuing a career as a visual artist. With the curator, there is an intersection of paths that marks a moment in our histories. With their participation in this exhibit, the artists become connected with one another and with viewers from the Phoenix area and elsewhere who visit Modified Arts during the exhibition. Most of the artists are from Arizona and Brazil with others from Brooklyn, Buenos Aires, Charlotte, Chicago, Mexico City, and San Francisco. The vast majority of the artists started producing work during the past 10-15 years in times of rapid technological advancement, increasing globalization albeit polarization, and the end and beginning of centuries and millennia. Of the 42 artists in the exhibition, 21 are currently based in Brazil making this the most ambitious showing of contemporary art in Phoenix and the Southwestern United States from Brazil, recently described as the “most exciting country on Earth” in the June 2010 issue of the U.K.-based Wallpaper magazine.

[…]

The art and exhibition concept are more relevant than ever in Arizona and the United States through the lenses of globalization, shifting populations, economic volatility, and human rights and dignity. The artworks are as diverse in content as in the origins and experiences of the artists who made them. Yet unbelievably the art is able to make its way to Phoenix more easily than many of the art makers. This is especially true of those living in the Americas to the south of us.

Gratehouse: Sunday Square Off, again. Plus, an action item to help Terry Goddard beat Jan Brewer.

phxated_gratehouse(Crosspost from Democratic Diva)

Must’ve been something I said last week because they asked me to tape it again.

I’m on the panel with Greg Patterson and Stan Barnes. Yeah, I know, 2 against 1, but it’s mostly about the GOP primaries since so many of them are trainwrecks. As a voter in CD3, I know I’m going to miss the 10 candidate clown car that is the Republican slate. I’m rooting for Brock Landers, all the way!

Next up, I’ve been asked to encourage y'all to contact Jan Brewer to demand that she participate in debates with Terry Goddard. He wants to do 6 and she intends only to do the Clean Elections one, and you know she’d try to wriggle out of that one if her participation weren’t mandatory. Phone number is 602-542-4331 and you can contact her via email here.

Here’s what I’m sending:

Dear Governor Brewer,

Governor of Arizona is an incredibly important responsibility and this state has problems far too numerous and pressing for you to be avoiding debates with your opponent. If you have time to be interviewed by national cable news networks then you have time to face Attorney General Goddard and let voters know where you stand and how you plan to address issues ranging from education to the economy to public safety.

Confidential to Ben Quayle: On Wednesday, give us a call!

quayle_red

Your big primary is Tuesday. You might be the GOP nominee in the race to replace John Shadegg in Arizona’s 3rd congressional district.

We have to be honest. We hope you win.

The primary, that is.

Last week it was revealed you used to hell around Scottsdale with the guy who founded Dirty Scottsdale.com, a skanky nightlife web site now morphed into The Dirty.com.

You used to write for the site under the name Brock Landers, a man embarked on an epic quest for Scottsdale’s hottest foxiest chick or somesuch, while all around you the site posted porny photos of club denizens with a lot of speculation about venereal diseases.

A classy operation!

This was two or three years ago.

Now all of a sudden you’re a family values Republican who borrows other peoples' kids so you look like a family man.

Anyway, like we said we hope you win, because you’d be vulnerable in the general.

But, here’s the deal.

The Dirty.com has really taken off. You seem to be a web guy with a magic touch.

And be honest: Is the search for Scottsdale’s hottest chick really over?

We think you’re the guy who can help find her—and help PHXated find its groove.

So, like we said, we hope you win on Tuesday.

But if not .. on Wednesday, drop us a line!

Napolitano Fights Back

janet_napolitano_2Janet Napolitano may have resigned as Arizona’s governor, but she’s keeping a watchful eye on the state that she was elected to lead:

Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano is continuing to push back against this year’s election-season narrative that the federal government is not doing enough to secure a lawless and chaotic U.S.-Mexican border.

In a telephone interview Thursday with The Arizona Republic, Napolitano cited the ongoing deployment to the border of 524 National Guard troops and a $600 million border-security bill passed by Congress earlier this month as the latest steps taken to stop Mexican drug smugglers and illegal immigrants from entering.

“One of the things that I have to deal with is perception versus facts,” Napolitano said.

“A perception that the federal government is ignoring the border, when the facts are quite to the contrary, particularly over the last 18, 19 months. The perception that the border is overrun. Look, nobody wants any illegal immigration, anybody crossing to sell drugs or to smuggle drugs, but the numbers are all trending, and dramatically so, downwards, not upwards. So, it’s important for people to recognize that our law-enforcement efforts that we’ve been undertaking in a very comprehensive manner all across the border are having real results.”

[…]

“The plain fact of the matter is that we, for the last year and a half, have been focused on that Southwest border,” Napolitano said.

“And the facts are the facts. The numbers are the numbers. We have seen dramatic reductions in illegal-immigrant apprehensions, which is a sign that fewer and fewer people are trying to cross. And we have seen increases in drug seizures and gun seizures and cash seizures, and part of that is because we are being able to focus on the drug trade as well as the human-trafficking trade.”

Congrats to Heat City

Phoenix Magazine has come out with its annual “Best of the Valley” edition.

Amongst the media winners is PHXated friend Nick Martin, who was named ‘Best Blogger’ for Heat City.

phm0910bov_21_mdFavoritism, shmavoritism – the Valley’s best blogger is PHOENIX magazine contributor Nick R. Martin, whose independently-produced Heat City news blog (heatcity.org) is a true marvel of D-I-Y journalism.

Competing against entire newsrooms at The Arizona Republic and other newspapers, Martin took first place in breaking news at the most recent Arizona Press Club Awards for getting the scoop on a series of arrests related to the 2004 bombing of the Scottsdale diversity office. And he essentially performed this service for free, since Heat City is funded by public donations.

Congrats Nick! And best of luck in your new endeavors.
